In a bold stride towards technological supremacy, China has embarked on an ambitious venture to construct a vast network of AI-powered supercomputers in space. This initiative aims to revolutionize satellite coordination and data processing, marking a significant milestone in the nation's space exploration endeavors.
Spearheaded by Chengdu-based ADA Space, the project, known as the "Star Compute" initiative, envisions deploying a constellation of 2,800 satellites equipped with advanced AI processors. These satellites are designed to communicate via laser links at speeds reaching up to 100 gigabits per second, facilitating rapid data exchange and minimizing reliance on ground-based stations.
The first phase witnessed the successful launch of 12 satellites on May 14 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, utilizing a Long March 2D rocket. Each satellite boasts onboard AI capabilities capable of 744 tera operations per second (TOPS), collectively achieving five peta operations per second (POPS). The ultimate goal is to reach a staggering 1,000 POPS, positioning the network as a formidable force in space-based computing.
Beyond satellite coordination, the network holds promise for diverse applications, including real-time 3D mapping for emergency response, gaming, and tourism.
