Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Police has issued a stern warning to the public about the growing threat of malicious apk (Android application) files being shared through social media platforms. These dangerous files often arrive disguised as offers related to government schemes or essential services and may even appear to be forwarded from the accounts of trusted friends or family members.
Authorities have cautioned users never to download or install any apk file received via platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, or Telegram, especially if the file seems unsolicited. Once installed, these files can grant cybercriminals full access to a user’s smartphone. This unauthorized access can lead to the theft of personal data, hacking of banking applications, and even complete financial fraud.
In many reported cases, once a phone is compromised, the fraudsters take control of the device and begin to drain money from bank accounts linked to the mobile. In a further twist, they also use the victim’s social media accounts to send the same malicious apk file to more people, creating a vicious cycle of cyber attacks.
The Kerala Police has strongly advised people to be vigilant and to ensure that they only download applications from trusted sources like the Google Play Store. Receiving an .apk file from a known contact does not guarantee safety, as the sender's account may have already been hijacked.
Victims or individuals who notice suspicious activities related to online financial fraud are encouraged to contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 immediately. Complaints can also be registered through the official website https://cybercrime.gov.in for prompt assistance.
This alert serves as a reminder that in the digital world, a single careless click can lead to devastating losses. Public cooperation and digital awareness are crucial in the fight against cybercrime.
