“A Tree in Mother’s Name” Initiative Blossoms at Ezhakkaranad School

Piravom: In a significant step toward promoting environmental consciousness among students, Ezhakkaranad Government Higher Secondary School has launched a new initiative titled “A Tree in Mother’s Name.” The project, focused on enhancing greenery and instilling ecological responsibility, involves planting and nurturing saplings within the school premises.

The initiative is led by the school’s Surya Club and encourages each student to plant a tree and take personal responsibility for its care. The unique aspect of the program lies in its emotional connection—students dedicate the trees to their mothers, symbolizing life, care, and growth. This approach not only nurtures environmental values but also strengthens family and cultural ties.

According to school authorities, the trees will be maintained throughout the year, including during school vacations. Students have committed to watering and protecting the saplings during holidays, ensuring their survival and long-term impact. The school grounds are being systematically used to accommodate the trees, with an emphasis on native species that are best suited to the local climate and biodiversity.

Teachers and staff have also joined hands with students, guiding them in planting techniques and ecological awareness. The initiative has received positive feedback from the local community, with hopes that it will inspire similar programs in other schools in the region.

Environmental educators stress the importance of such grassroots programs in addressing the climate crisis and instilling long-term sustainability habits. By linking personal responsibility with environmental care, Ezhakkaranad School’s initiative sets a powerful example for educational institutions across the state.

The school plans to monitor the growth of the trees regularly and maintain records of student participation, aiming to make this project a model for environmental education in Kerala.
