Agra: The Archdiocese of Agra convened its Diocesan Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) Meet under the theme “The Importance of BEC in the Synodal Church”, drawing priests, religious, and lay faithful from across the Archdiocese. The event focused on deepening understanding of the Church’s mission and fostering active participation through vibrant BECs.
In his inaugural address, Archbishop Raphy Manjaly welcomed attendees and resource persons, emphasizing the integral role of BECs in realizing the Synodal Church. He highlighted the three pillars of synodality participation, communion, and mission explaining that these are concretely lived out within the BEC framework. Comparing the Church to a living body, he noted, “Just as the head cannot function apart from the body, every part of the Church must work together in unity.”
Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan of Punalur, Chairman of the BEC Commission of the CCBI, underscored the significance of Church documents and papal encyclicals in guiding the work of BECs. He explained how these texts provide a solid foundation for fostering community life rooted in faith, action, and shared responsibility.
Sr. Christine, National BEC Coordinator, spoke passionately about BECs as more than gatherings or discussions. She described them as a way of life, asserting that “anyone desiring eternal life must pass through the experience of BECs,” and that “to know BECs is to know Jesus and the Kingdom of God.”
Mr. Emmanuel, National BEC Member, reflected on the local and lived expressions of the Body of Christ through BECs, emphasizing how these communities strengthen interpersonal bonds and make Christ’s presence tangible within neighbourhoods.
The Diocesan BEC Meet concluded with a renewed commitment from the Archdiocese to foster communion, participation, and mission at every level of parish life. Through these gatherings, the spirit of synodality is set to flourish, ensuring that Basic Ecclesial Communities remain vibrant centers of faith, service, and evangelization.
