Kerala Latin Catholic Bishops Urge Value-Driven Voting Ahead of Local Polls

Kochi: The Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC) has called on the Latin Catholic community to approach the upcoming local self-government elections with a strong focus on values, social justice, and community welfare. In a pastoral letter released ahead of Latin Catholic Day on December 7, the bishops urged voters to rise above partisan loyalties and support candidates committed to equity, inclusive development, and the protection of vulnerable groups.

In their message, the bishops stressed that elections must become an opportunity to reinforce democratic ideals rather than deepen divisions. They noted that at a time when Kerala is witnessing increasing social and political polarization, it is vital that minority communities receive fair representation and that the principles of justice, unity, and mutual respect remain central to public life.

A significant portion of the letter was devoted to long-pending concerns affecting Latin Catholics and other marginalized Christian groups. The Council expressed deep frustration over the continued delay in publishing the Justice J. B. Koshy Commission report, which examined the educational and socio-economic challenges faced by Latin Catholics and Dalit Christians. Despite repeated assurances, the recommendations of the Commission remain unimplemented, a situation the bishops described as both disappointing and unjust.

The letter also highlighted persistent issues at the grassroots level, including the difficulty many continue to face in securing community certificates. Coastal communities, the bishops noted, remain particularly neglected, with unresolved problems at Muthalappozhi, inadequate coastal protection measures in Chellanam and Fort Kochi, and rising anxiety over coastal highway development. The Council urged the government to prioritize these matters and ensure long-term safety and livelihood protection for fisherfolk.

Another area of concern is the growing fear among residents of high-range regions due to frequent wild animal attacks an issue worsened, the bishops said, by unchecked construction activities and extensive soil removal that disturb ecological balance. They called for a scientific and humane response that protects both human life and the environment.

The pastoral letter further criticized the prolonged delay in granting Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians and highlighted the diminishing legislative presence of the Anglo-Indian community. The bishops demanded a just and constitutional approach to the rights of all minorities, including increased and exclusively allocated funding for the Converted Christian Development Corporation to support Dalit Christians effectively.

Amidst these concerns, the Council welcomed the recent Kerala High Court verdict affirming land rights for families in Munambam. The bishops said the ruling offers renewed hope and urged the government to act promptly to resolve remaining land disputes.

As part of Latin Catholic Day celebrations, all parishes and institutions under the jurisdiction of the KRLCC will hoist the Council’s flag on December 7. Dioceses across the state will also host awareness programmes aimed at strengthening community solidarity, highlighting ongoing concerns, and encouraging a more socially conscious participation in local governance.
