Gujarat Emerges as India’s Top Renewable Energy Hub, Contributing 16.5% of National Capacity; Sources Says

Ahmedabad: According to media sources, Gujarat has secured the top position among Indian states in renewable energy generation, accounting for 16.5 per cent of the country’s total installed renewable power capacity. Official data indicates that the state’s renewable energy capacity reached 42.583 gigawatts (GW) as of December 2025, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy journey.

This achievement places Gujarat at the forefront of the nation’s push towards sustainable power as India works to meet its goal of sourcing 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and attaining net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat now ranks first in the country in overall installed renewable energy capacity as well as wind power generation, while standing second in solar power capacity. Of the total renewable energy installed in the state, wind power contributes about 14,820.94 megawatts (MW), while solar energy accounts for 25,529.40 MW. The remaining capacity is derived from hybrid renewable projects and off-grid systems.

Gujarat has also emerged as the national leader in rooftop solar installations. More than 1.1 million rooftop solar systems have been installed across residential, commercial, and industrial segments, generating 6,412.80 MW of power. Media reports suggest that the state alone accounts for over a quarter of India’s total rooftop solar capacity.

The rooftop solar expansion includes 2,073.65 MW installed under the Surya Gujarat scheme, 1,913 MW under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, and 2,267.04 MW added through other initiatives. In the broader solar sector, Gujarat’s installed capacity of 25,529.40 MW includes 17,771.21 MW from ground-mounted projects, 6,412.80 MW from rooftop systems, 1,172.38 MW from wind–solar hybrid projects, and 173.01 MW from off-grid installations, including projects under the PM KUSUM scheme.

Several large solar parks are already operational in the state, including the Charanka Solar Park with a capacity of 749 MW, Radhanesda with 700 MW, and Dholera with 300 MW. Meanwhile, the massive renewable energy park under development at Khavda in Kutch planned for a total capacity of 37.35 GW has already commissioned 11.33 GW, making it the largest renewable energy project currently under development anywhere in the world.

Wind energy continues to be a strong pillar of Gujarat’s renewable portfolio, with total installations standing at 14,820.64 MW. The Kutch district alone contributes 7,476.73 MW, followed by Jamnagar (1,867.65 MW), Devbhumi Dwarka (1,281.26 MW), Amreli (973.85 MW), Rajkot (874.90 MW), Bhavnagar (618.80 MW), Morbi (568.60 MW), Surendranagar (456.60 MW), and Patan (208.20 MW).

Wind–solar hybrid projects developed under the state’s 2018 Hybrid Policy and the Renewable Energy Policy 2023 have added a further 2,398.77 MW to Gujarat’s energy mix. According to media sources, these policy frameworks have played a key role in accelerating private investment and project execution.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has said that Gujarat’s rapid progress in renewable energy reflects “consistent policy support and effective implementation in alignment with national climate commitments.” Officials estimate that renewable energy development in the state has generated approximately 2.37 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.

At present, Gujarat has 5,203 renewable energy projects under various stages of implementation. These include 4,992 solar projects with a combined capacity of 32.22 GW, 72 wind projects totalling 15 GW, and 139 hybrid projects with a cumulative planned capacity of 21.15 GW.

Looking ahead, the state has set an ambitious target of achieving 105 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This would allow Gujarat to contribute nearly 20 per cent of India’s planned 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy capacity, further cementing its role as a national leader in the clean energy transition.
