Chennai: The Indian National Congress has categorically rejected reports suggesting differences with its long-standing ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), in Tamil Nadu, asserting that the alliance remains stable, united, and firmly on track ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing the media in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K. Selvaperunthagai described the reports of discord as baseless and misleading. He emphasized that there is no crisis or misunderstanding within the alliance and that coordination between the Congress and the DMK continues smoothly at both the state and national levels.
Selvaperunthagai said discussions regarding seat-sharing and election strategy are progressing in a constructive manner. He clarified that preliminary talks have already taken place between leaders of both parties and that the Congress has forwarded its recommendations to the party high command. Final decisions, he noted, will be taken by the central leadership in consultation with alliance partners, following established political procedures.
The Congress leader also cautioned against reading too much into speculative media narratives, especially during an election season when rumours and politically motivated interpretations tend to gain traction. He stressed that the Congress remains fully committed to the DMK-led alliance and to the broader objectives of the INDIA bloc, of which both parties are key constituents in Tamil Nadu.
Recent reports had hinted at unease within sections of the Congress unit in the state, with claims of dissatisfaction over seat allocation and suggestions of exploring alternative political alignments. Party leaders, however, have consistently downplayed such talk, reiterating that internal discussions are part of normal democratic functioning and do not indicate a breakdown of alliances.
Political observers note that alliance negotiations often intensify in the run-up to elections, leading to heightened speculation. In this context, the Congress’s public reaffirmation of its partnership with the DMK appears aimed at projecting stability and unity to both cadres and voters.
The Congress-DMK alliance has played a significant role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape over the past decade, combining the DMK’s strong regional base with the Congress’s national presence. With the 2026 Assembly polls approaching, both parties are keen to maintain cohesion and present a united front against rival formations.
By firmly denying reports of internal differences, the Congress has sought to put speculation to rest and signal that its alliance with the DMK remains intact, functional, and focused on electoral preparedness and governance goals in Tamil Nadu.
