India approves purchase of 288 S 400 missiles from Russia

New Delhi: India has cleared the purchase of 288 S 400 surface to air missiles from Russia in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s air defence capability. The decision was approved by the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The deal, estimated at about ₹10,000 crore, includes 120 short range missiles and 168 long range missiles. Officials said the procurement will be carried out under the fast track procedure to ensure quicker delivery and operational readiness.

The additional missiles are expected to replenish existing stocks and enhance India’s layered air defence system. The S 400 system is designed to detect, track and destroy a wide range of aerial threats including fighter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

India signed a 5.43 billion dollar agreement with Russia in 2018 to procure five S 400 air defence systems, considered among the most advanced in the world. Three units are already operational, while the remaining systems are expected to be delivered by mid and late 2026.

With a detection range of up to 600 kilometres and an interception capability of up to 400 kilometres, the S 400 plays a key role in protecting strategic locations and strengthening national security.

The latest purchase reflects India’s continued efforts to modernise its armed forces and maintain strong defence preparedness amid evolving regional security challenges.
