Stormy Showdown in Lok Sabha: Voting on Key Bills Delayed to Evening Amid Rahul’s ‘Balakot Magician’ Jibe

New Delhi: A high-voltage political confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Friday as crucial legislation, including the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill and the delimitation proposal, moved toward a decisive vote scheduled for 7 PM after prolonged debate disrupted earlier timelines.

Originally slated for voting in the afternoon, the process was pushed back due to extended and intense discussions between treasury benches and the opposition. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to deliver the government’s final response ahead of the vote, formally outlining its position on the contentious bills.

The debate saw fierce criticism from opposition leaders, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launching a sharp attack on the government. Without directly naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul used a provocative metaphor, referring to him as the “magician of Balakot,” suggesting that the country has now “seen through the illusion.”

Rahul further alleged that the government’s push for delimitation is a calculated attempt to weaken the political representation of southern and northeastern states, thereby consolidating power. He warned that such measures could undermine the federal balance and unity of India, asserting that the opposition would collectively resist any move that threatens equitable representation.

The remark sparked immediate outrage from the ruling party. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh demanded an apology and called for disciplinary action, arguing that such language violates parliamentary decorum. Speaker Om Birla also expressed concern, noting that the use of such terms does not align with the dignity expected in Parliament.

Meanwhile, intense political manoeuvring continued behind closed doors in New Delhi. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju held discussions with the Prime Minister, while Amit Shah met with the Speaker, signaling last-minute strategic consultations ahead of the vote.

Despite the urgency, the government faces a numerical challenge. Reports indicate that it may fall short of the required two-thirds majority needed to pass the bills, particularly in the Lok Sabha, where a significant vote deficit persists.

As the clock ticks toward the evening vote, the outcome remains uncertain, with the debate reflecting deeper political divisions over representation, federal balance, and the future direction of India’s parliamentary democracy.
