New Delhi : The foreign ministers of the Quad nations met in New Delhi on Monday and announced a series of new steps aimed at strengthening cooperation in the Indo Pacific region amid rising global tensions and growing concerns over security, trade and energy supplies.
The meeting brought together Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. The four leaders discussed maritime security, infrastructure development, energy cooperation and economic resilience during the high level talks.
The Quad grouping, which includes India, the United States, Japan and Australia, has increasingly become an important strategic platform in the Indo Pacific. The alliance is often seen as a response to China’s expanding military and economic influence across the region.
One of the key announcements from the meeting was a new maritime security initiative that will improve real time information sharing among the four countries. Officials said the plan is intended to strengthen monitoring of important sea routes and improve cooperation against illegal activities at sea. The move comes at a time when tensions remain high in the South China Sea and other parts of the Indo Pacific.
The ministers also announced a joint infrastructure project in Fiji. The four countries will work together to improve port facilities in the Pacific island nation. Analysts believe the project is part of wider efforts by the Quad countries to increase their engagement with Pacific nations where China has expanded its investments and influence in recent years.
Energy security was another major issue discussed during the talks. The ministers launched a new Indo Pacific energy security initiative aimed at protecting fuel supply chains and improving cooperation during global disruptions. The discussions gained importance as continuing tensions in West Asia and uncertainty surrounding global oil supplies have raised fears of energy shortages and price increases in many countries.
Officials said a special Quad fuel security forum hosted by the United States is expected to take place later this year. The forum will focus on long term energy stability and cooperation among Indo Pacific nations.
India and the United States also moved forward with cooperation in critical minerals, which are essential for electric vehicles, semiconductors and renewable energy industries. Experts say the agreement reflects efforts by several countries to reduce dependence on China for the supply and processing of critical minerals.
The meeting also carried diplomatic significance for India and the United States. Marco Rubio’s visit came at a time when both countries are managing differences over trade and tariffs under the administration of President Donald Trump. Despite those disagreements, both sides stressed the importance of maintaining strong strategic ties.
Rubio also met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. The leaders discussed regional security, trade, technology cooperation and developments in West Asia. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to stronger defence and economic partnerships.
In their joint statement, the Quad ministers expressed concern over actions that could threaten peace and stability in the Indo Pacific region. Although China was not directly named in some sections of the statement, the message reflected growing unease among the four countries over military activities and territorial disputes in the region.
China reacted critically to the meeting and warned against what it described as exclusive groupings targeting other nations. Beijing has often accused the Quad of attempting to contain China’s rise in Asia.
Observers say the New Delhi meeting showed that the Quad countries are trying to move beyond diplomatic discussions and focus more on practical cooperation. The announcements on maritime security, energy resilience and infrastructure development indicate that the alliance is expanding its role in regional affairs during a period of increasing geopolitical uncertainty.
