Bangladesh and India strengthen border cooperation amid migrant dispute

New Delhi: Bangladesh and India have agreed to strengthen cooperation along their shared border through coordinated patrols and increased intelligence sharing as both countries seek to ease tensions over illegal migration and cross border movements.

The agreement was reached during a four day meeting in New Delhi between senior officials of Bangladesh's Border Guard Bangladesh and India's Border Security Force. The discussions focused on improving security along the more than 4,000 kilometre border that the two neighbouring countries share.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both sides agreed to increase coordinated patrols, improve the exchange of intelligence, and work more closely to prevent illegal border crossings, human trafficking, smuggling, and other criminal activities. Officials also reaffirmed their commitment to the Coordinated Border Management Plan, which serves as the framework for cooperation between the two border forces.

The move comes at a time when relations between the two countries have faced strain over allegations involving undocumented migrants. Bangladesh has repeatedly accused India of pushing people across the border without following established diplomatic procedures. Dhaka has formally protested these incidents and has called for proper verification of nationality before any repatriation takes place.

The issue has become increasingly sensitive in recent months. Bangladesh authorities have claimed that several groups of people were sent towards its territory from the Indian side without prior coordination. In response, Bangladeshi security forces increased patrols, surveillance operations, and monitoring along vulnerable sections of the frontier.

India, meanwhile, has intensified efforts to identify and deport undocumented migrants living within its borders. Authorities have particularly focused on states near the Bangladesh border, including Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura. Indian officials have asked Bangladesh to verify the nationality of thousands of people suspected of being Bangladeshi citizens residing in India without legal documentation.

The migration issue has gained political significance in both countries. Reports from Indian and Bangladeshi media suggest that border officials on both sides have recently accused each other of attempting to force people across the frontier. These accusations have increased public attention on border management and migration policies.

Several incidents along the border in recent weeks have highlighted the challenges facing both governments. In some areas, security forces reportedly faced temporary standoffs involving groups of suspected undocumented migrants. While most situations were resolved peacefully, they underscored the need for stronger communication and cooperation between border authorities.

Political groups in Bangladesh have also raised concerns over the issue. Some opposition parties have announced demonstrations near border areas, accusing India of carrying out forced returns. The matter has become part of wider domestic political debates as Bangladesh continues to navigate a changing political landscape following developments in the country over the past two years.

Despite the tensions, both governments appear determined to prevent the dispute from damaging broader bilateral relations. Bangladesh and India maintain extensive cooperation in trade, transport, energy, security, and regional development projects. Officials from both sides have repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful and stable relations.

Analysts say the latest agreement demonstrates a shared recognition that border challenges can only be addressed through cooperation rather than confrontation. The commitment to coordinated patrols and intelligence sharing is expected to improve communication between security forces and reduce the risk of misunderstandings along the border.

While the latest meeting produced a positive outcome, significant challenges remain. Questions surrounding the identification, verification, and repatriation of undocumented migrants continue to be a source of disagreement between the two countries.

For now, however, the agreement signals a willingness by both Bangladesh and India to work together in managing one of the region's most complex border issues. The next meeting between senior border officials is expected to take place in Dhaka later this year, where progress on the new measures will be reviewed and further cooperation discussed.
