Pope Francis announces 21 new cardinals; India blessed with two more Cardinals

Pope Francis announces that he will create 21 new Cardinals at a Consistory on Saturday, 27 August. They represent the Church worldwide, and reflect a wide variety of cultures, contexts and pastoral ministries.

Pope Francis announced that he will hold a Consistory for the creation of new cardinals, at the conclusion of the Regina Coeli today (Sunday).

He said the meet will be held during the next two days - on Monday and Tuesday, 29-30 August - with all the cardinals to reflect on the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium. The consistory for the creation of new cardinals will precede the meeting.

Eight of the newly named Cardinals are from Europe, six from Asia, two from Africa, one from North America, and four from Central and Latin America. The full list of the newly elected Cardinals is as follows

The last consistory to create new cardinals took place on Nov. 28, 2020. Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has created 101 cardinals from 58 countries at seven consistories.

The College of Cardinals currently consists of 208 Cardinals, of whom 117 are electors, ie, eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a Pope and 91 non-electors. As of 27 August, the number will grow to 229 Cardinals, of whom 131 will be electors.

Geographically, the cardinals will be distributed as follows: Europe - 107 cardinals, of whom 54 are electors; the Americas - 60 cardinals, of whom 38 are electors; Asia - 30 cardinals, of whom 20 are electors; Africa - 27 cardinals, of whom 17 are electors; and Oceania - 5 cardinals, of whom 3 are electors.

India blessed with two new Cardinals
H.E Anthony Poola, Archbishop of Hyderabad and H.E Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Damão will be elevated as Cardinals on 27 August.


Archbishop Anthony Poola was born on 15 November, 1961, at Chindhukur, Andhra Pradesh. He was ordained priest on 20 February, 1992. At the age of 46, he was ordained Bishop on 19 April 2008. He was appointed as the Archbishop of Hyderabad by Pope Francis on 19 November, 2020. He was installed as the eleventh Archbishop on 3 January, 2021.

Archbishop Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão was born on Jan. 20, 1953, in Aldona in Goa & Daman archdiocese. He was ordained priest on Oct. 28, 1979. On Dec. 20, 1993 he was appointed the auxiliary bishop of Goa & Daman and simultaneously was appointed as the titular bishop of Vanariona. On April 10, 1994, he was ordained as the titular bishop of Vanariona. On Dec. 12, 2003, he was appointed archbishop of Goa & Daman and patriarch of East Indies. On March 21, 2004, he was installed as the archbishop of Goa & Daman. He is the presently the chairman of the laity commission in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.
