Meta has introduced a paid verification service for Facebook and Instagram, following a model employed by platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram. To encourage more users to subscribe to the Meta Verified service, the company is reportedly working on an option that will allow users to exclusively view content from verified accounts.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has revealed that the platform is testing a toggle that filters posts in the feed to display content solely from verified accounts. Users can access this new filter in the menu for switching between Following and Favorites feeds. Mosseri believes that this toggle will enhance visibility for creators and brands, offering them a valuable discovery tool.
Currently, there is no information available regarding how many users have access to this experimental toggle for filtering posts by verified accounts. As it's still in the testing phase, there's a possibility it may not be rolled out to all Instagram users.
The primary objective behind this filter is to encourage more Instagram users to subscribe to Meta Verified. In the United States, this service costs $11.99 per month or $14.99 if subscribed through iOS or Android apps. Subscribers can undergo identity verification by submitting a government-issued ID, resulting in a blue seal on their profiles.
In another effort to boost revenue, Meta is contemplating the launch of a subscription plan to eliminate advertisements from Instagram and Facebook. Initially, this plan would be introduced to European users in compliance with new EU regulations requiring express consent before collecting user data for personalized ads. The plan is expected to cost around $17 per month, and it remains uncertain whether it will include Meta Verified. Elon Musk has also been exploring a similar concept for X, with mobile app code indicating new tiers of the X Premium subscription, allowing users to remove ads.
