The Syro Malabar Church Laity Forum requests the state government to take immediate steps in the problems faced by the Christian community in Kerala today. The government should understand the discrimination and hardships experienced by the farmers and prepare to pave the way for positive decisions. Delaying practical actions at the government level in matters related to the JB Koshi Commission report puts the Christian community in deep crisis.
Central and state governments need to take a sympathetic approach to the problems faced by farmers in Kerala. The state government should understand the truth that even after the Supreme Court judgment on the buffer zone issue, the concerns of the farmers remain unaddressed. It is sad that the state government does not come up with policies to protect the farmers even though the wild animals coming down on the agricultural land have become a threat to the farmer's life and property.
The government is reminded that farmers whose lives have been disrupted due to wild animals.Falling prices, hardships during the rainy season are constantly pushing the lives of farmers into more misery. The crisis in the agricultural sector is still not taken seriously by the state government. There is no significant action to compensate the farmers affected by crop losses or to ease their debt burden. Banks are also reluctant in this regard. There is not even much discussion about agricultural loan waivers or extension of tenure. It is reminded that it is the responsibility of the government to provide relief to farmers in times of crisis.
The joint actions of the Ministers of Revenue-Forest-Minority Welfare-Local Self-Government-Agriculture should be on the problems faced by the Christian community. Concerns about the practical problems faced in getting the benefit of financial reservation for non-reserved classes should be addressed. The state government should sympathetically consider the problems faced by the Dalit Christians and the farmers and the coastal residents of Kuttanad. Unjustified discrimination and illegal norms still exist in Kerala.Laity Forum requests the state government to take prompt steps to resolve the problems faced by Christians in various areas in Kerala.
