Climate change meet calls for action

Kochi: Small islands are experiencing severe consequences of climate change, a reality that places regions like Vypeen at significant risk, according to senior professor Muhammad Hatha from the Cusat School of Marine Sciences. He shared these insights during the climate roundtable seminar, "Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions," held on Monday as part of the Vypeen Folklore Fest.

The seminar, organized in collaboration with the NGO Plan at Earth and supported by the CSR fund of Cochin Shipyard, aimed to address both local and global climate challenges. Hatha emphasized the critical role of engaging younger generations as advocates for change. "Nature’s capacity is vast, and no one is immune from its fury during disasters. Thoughtful actions can turn ideas into impactful solutions," he stated.

Manoj M.G. from Cusat's Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research highlighted that approximately 75% of global disasters are directly linked to climate change.

The discussions, moderated by Harish N. Ramanathan from the Cusat School of Industrial Fisheries, stressed the need for global funding at the highest levels to support scientific research and mitigate the effects of climate change. The event was welcomed by Suraj Abraham, secretary of Plan at Earth.
