In a significant gathering at Rome's Pontifical Antonianum University from April 8 to 9, religious leaders and scholars assembled to explore the role of interfaith collaboration in promoting social cohesion and addressing climate justice. The conference, titled "Common Horizons - Interreligious Pathways to Social Cohesion and Climate Justice in Europe," was organized by the International Dialogue Centre (KAICIID).

Cardinal George Koovakad, the newly appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, opened the event by referencing Pope Benedict XVI's insight that globalization has made us neighbors but not necessarily brothers. He emphasized that mere belief in God is insufficient to address environmental and social challenges; instead, a transformative spirituality and lifestyle are required to counteract the prevailing technocratic paradigm.

Ambassador Alvaro Albacete, KAICIID's Deputy Secretary General, highlighted the organization's commitment to fostering dialogue among different faiths and cultures. He pointed out that such dialogue is essential for building bridges and understanding, particularly in the context of Europe's diverse societies.

Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, President of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe, underscored the moral imperative for religious communities to engage actively in climate justice initiatives. He noted that faith traditions possess unique resources and motivations to inspire action towards environmental stewardship and social harmony.

The conference also featured workshops and panel discussions focusing on practical strategies for interreligious cooperation in tackling climate change and enhancing social cohesion. Participants shared best practices and explored collaborative projects aimed at fostering sustainable communities and mutual respect among diverse populations.

This Rome conference builds upon previous interfaith efforts, such as the Global Faith Leaders Summit held in Abu Dhabi in November 2023, where the Holy See joined other religious leaders in signing the Interfaith Declaration on Climate Action Towards COP28. These ongoing dialogues reflect a growing recognition of the pivotal role that faith communities play in addressing global challenges through unity and shared values.
