Wolff: Formula 1’s Sustainable Fuel Costs Surging Beyond Expectations

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed that Formula One’s upcoming move to 100% sustainable fuel is turning out to be far pricier than originally anticipated. The subject was brought up during a recent Formula One commission meeting, where engine suppliers, team bosses, and key stakeholders gathered to discuss future plans. Concerns are mounting as the series prepares to roll out this green initiative next season.

Speaking at the Miami Grand Prix, Wolff explained that the high costs are tied to the entire supply chain needing to meet strict sustainability standards. “It’s not just about the fuel itself — the entire process, from sourcing to production, has to be green,” Wolff told reporters. “To meet those standards, you need a specific blend of components that come at a steep price. It’s proving far more expensive than anyone had calculated initially.”

Wolff emphasized that Formula One may need to reconsider some regulations to help lower the per-litre price of the sustainable fuel. Mercedes’ long-time fuel partner, Petronas, remains fully invested in the technical challenge, but Wolff acknowledged they are also exploring possible regulatory adjustments to ensure the initiative remains economically feasible.

Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing’s team principal, acknowledged the high development costs but seemed less concerned about the impact on his own operation. According to Horner, “While the costs are significant, it’s not something that’s particularly troubling us right now.” He did, however, suggest that Formula One might consider introducing a pricing framework or cap going forward.

Horner also pointed out that fuel innovation could become a major area of competitive advantage in the coming seasons. “Fuel could be one of the big differentiators in performance,” he noted. “The fuel companies appear deeply committed to pushing development, which adds another fascinating layer to the sport.”

As Formula One heads toward a greener future, teams are grappling with the balance between sustainability and cost. While some, like Mercedes, are sounding the alarm on expenses, others are focused on the potential for innovation and performance gains. Either way, the introduction of fully sustainable fuel promises to reshape both the technological and financial landscape of the sport in 2026 and beyond.
