Pope to Vietnamese Catechists: You Are a Living Sign of Faith and Never Walk Alone

Vatican City: In a heartfelt video message marking the 400th birth anniversary of Blessed Andrew Phú Yên, Vietnam’s first martyr, Pope Leo XIV offered encouragement and gratitude to catechists across Vietnam, reminding them that their mission is never solitary and that they are sustained by faith, tradition, and the communion of the Church.

Speaking directly to the thousands of catechists, especially youth, who joined the call from various parts of the country, the Pope emphasized the spiritual bond shared in the presence of Blessed Andrew’s holy relic, calling it a moment of grace and unity in prayer.

Recalling the life of Blessed Andrew Phú Yên, who was baptized and served as a devoted aide to Jesuit missionaries, the Pope described him as a “precious son of Vietnam” and an unwavering disciple who paid the ultimate price for his faith. Martyred at just 19 for refusing to renounce Christ, Andrew’s last breath carried the name of Jesus an act of bold love that earned him the title of Protomartyr of Vietnam. He was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000 and remains the patron of catechists.

Pope Leo praised the vibrant catechetical life in Vietnam, highlighting the 64,000 catechists who teach both within the country and abroad. Describing them as a vital force in parish communities, the Pope thanked them for the gift of their service, urging them to recognize their role in forming young hearts and minds in friendship with Christ.

“By your witness and dedication,” he said, “you are the living presence of God's love, missionary disciples like Blessed Andrew, humble and zealous.”

Drawing inspiration from Andrew’s strength during imprisonment and his appeal for prayer from fellow Christians, Pope Leo reminded all catechists that they are not alone in their mission. “The journey of faith, especially in the field of catechesis, is never walked in isolation. We are members of the Body of Christ, bound together by grace and mission.”

The Pope also urged catechists to remain deeply connected to their families and cultural heritage. He emphasized that their ministry is nourished by the enduring faith of parents and grandparents who bore witness under persecution. “Your roots,” the Pope said, “are sacred gifts. Use them to inspire and guide your catechetical service.”

In closing, Pope Leo XIV invited Vietnamese catechists to spiritually join the upcoming Jubilee of Youth in Rome, expressing his desire that they remain united with their peers in Vietnam and the universal Church. Entrusting them to the intercession of Blessed Andrew, the Pope offered his blessing to all present, affirming their mission and reminding them once again: “You are never alone.”
