Pope to Youth: In Baptism, You Wear Christ Like a New Garment

Vatican City: Addressing a vibrant group of young French catechumens and newly baptized faithful, Pope Leo XIV offered a heartfelt message on the transformative power of baptism, calling it the moment one is truly clothed in Christ.

The encounter took place as part of the Jubilee of Youth events in Rome. The Pope warmly acknowledged the spiritual journey of the young participants, alongside their bishops, chaplains, and catechists who have guided them.

The Pope emphasized that Christianity is not something inherited by birth, but embraced through a personal encounter with Christ. “Baptism is not merely a rite,” he explained, “but a profound entry into a living relationship with the Trinity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”

He spoke of the joy he sees in young people choosing to commit themselves to the faith, underscoring that baptism makes them full-fledged members of the global family of God.

Quoting Saint Paul’s words to the Galatians “All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” Pope Leo reflected on the dignity conferred upon every baptized person. He urged the youth to reject the surrounding "culture of death" and instead carry within them the light of Christ that guides, strengthens, and heals.

Drawing attention to the moment in the baptismal liturgy where a candle is lit from the Paschal flame, the Pope reminded the audience that the fire of the risen Christ is a light meant to burn throughout life. “Nourish this light with the Word of God and regular communion with Jesus in the Eucharist,” he said.

He also cited Saint Ambrose’s line, “Omnia Christus est nobis!” “Christ is everything for us.” Whether in darkness or in need, Christ is the healer, the light, and the ultimate hope.

“You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world,” Pope Leo told the youth, urging them to be bold in witnessing their faith. He reiterated that becoming Christian is a conscious transformation sparked by the grace of God not a condition one is born into.

In concluding, the Pope encouraged them to remain deeply rooted in Christ, especially when life gets difficult. “May your hearts always rest in Him who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” he said. “Happy Jubilee, and thank you for the beauty of your faith.”
