International Literacy Day Highlights Urgent Need for Global Action on Education

The world today marked International Literacy Day with renewed calls to strengthen access to education and bridge the learning gap that continues to affect millions across the globe. Observed annually on September 8 since 1967, the day serves as a reminder of the essential role literacy plays in promoting dignity, empowerment, and sustainable development.

This year’s theme, “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition,” emphasizes the importance of equipping people with knowledge and skills to adapt to the rapidly changing global landscape shaped by digital technology, migration, climate change, and social challenges.

According to UNESCO, despite significant progress in the past decades, an estimated 763 million adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills, with two-thirds of them being women. Children and young people are also among the most vulnerable, particularly in regions affected by conflict, poverty, and limited access to schools.

Events marking the day were held worldwide, including conferences, community reading campaigns, workshops, and digital learning programs. In India, schools and literacy centers organized awareness drives, essay competitions, and reading sessions to highlight the importance of education as a fundamental right.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, in her message, stressed that literacy is a cornerstone of human rights and social inclusion. “In today’s world of transition, literacy is more than just the ability to read and write it is the foundation for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and participation in society,” she said.

Experts warn that without urgent measures to close educational gaps, global development goals including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030, could face serious setbacks.

As the world reflects on International Literacy Day, governments, educators, and communities are being urged to work together to expand literacy programs, harness digital tools, and ensure that no child or adult is left behind in the journey toward a literate and empowered world.
