Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV spoke directly to more than 15000 teenagers gathered in Indianapolis through a live video link on Friday, encouraging them to grow in friendship with Jesus and to use technology in a healthy and meaningful way.
The young people were attending the National Catholic Youth Conference in the United States. During the event six teenagers asked Pope questions about faith, mental health, technology and the future of the Church.
Pope praised the participants for coming together in person and reminded them that the Sacraments are real moments where they can meet Jesus. He highlighted the value of Mass, Eucharistic adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, calling Confession a place where God offers mercy without hesitation. He told them that sin never has the last word and encouraged them to trust in Gods forgiveness.
When asked about sadness and mental health struggles, Pope Leo urged young people to speak honestly with Jesus in prayer and to find trusted adults who can guide and support them. He encouraged them to pray for good friends who help them stay close to God and reminded them that no one is ever completely alone because Christ understands every heart.
A major part of the conversation focused on technology and its growing influence. Pope said digital tools can be very helpful for prayer, reading the Bible and learning about the faith. However, he warned that technology should never replace face to face relationships or participation in the Church. He advised the young people to be intentional with their screen time and to use artificial intelligence in ways that support true human growth. Even if AI vanished tomorrow he said they should still know how to think and create on their own.
Looking toward the future of the Church, Pope Leo reminded the teenagers that they are not only the future but also the present. He encouraged them to take part in their parish communities and to discern what God may be calling them to do. Whether in marriage, priesthood or religious life he said every vocation is a mission of love.
Pope concluded by inviting young Catholics to be friends of Christ and builders of peace. He asked them to avoid using political labels when talking about the Church because the Church does not belong to any party. Instead, it seeks to form consciences rooted in truth, wisdom and love.
Encouraging them to offer their time and talents generously he told them that the world needs their witness and their joy in Christ.
