Vatican City: On the eve of the sixth edition of the annual Vatican “Concert with the Poor”, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV met with the artists and organizer’s, celebrating the initiative as a “beautiful tradition” that brings the Church together in preparation for Christmas. The Pope emphasized that the event, initiated under Pope Francis, is a reflection of the Gospel’s call to recognize Christ in those who are most vulnerable.
In his address, Pope Leo invoked Saint Paul’s words on Christ’s humility: “who for your sake became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” He noted that the Incarnation itself is a profound revelation of God the Father’s love for humanity. Drawing from Benedict XVI’s Deus Caritas Est, the Pope highlighted that God, in Jesus Christ, actively seeks the “stray sheep” the suffering and marginalized underscoring the Church’s mission to encounter the needy with compassion and solidarity.
The Pope stressed that the concert is far more than a musical performance or charitable gesture. Quoting the Gospel of Matthew, “Just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me,” and referencing his Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi te, he said: “In the poor, he continues to speak to us.” He reminded participants that human dignity is not measured by material wealth, but by the fact that every person is a beloved child of God. This conviction guides the concert’s focus on those most in need, ensuring they are at the heart of the celebration.
Reflecting on the power of music, Pope Leo observed that liturgical and sacred song is meant to “elevate the soul,” quoting Saint Augustine: “You must sing to Him… sing well, brothers.” Lightheartedly addressing the performers, he added, “Please, sing well tomorrow!” He further described music as a form of love and a via pulchritudinis a path of beauty that leads hearts closer to God.
Pope Leo concluded by expressing gratitude to those who make the event possible, including Cardinal Vicar Baldo Reina, Monsignor Marco Frisina, the Choir of the Diocese of Rome, the Orchestra, the Nova Opera Foundation, as well as performers Serena Autieri, Canadian singer Michael Bublé and his band, and all artists, musicians, and partners supporting this heartfelt initiative. The Pope’s message reinforced that through art, music, and care for the marginalized, the faithful can experience the true spirit of Christmas.
