Ukraine Calls for Urgent Acceleration of Peace Negotiations, Says Only Trump Can Seal Final Deal

Kyiv: Ukraine has issued a renewed appeal for a swift conclusion to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending its nearly four-year war with Russia, emphasizing that U.S. President Donald Trump holds a unique role in brokering a comprehensive peace agreement. As negotiations continue under U.S. mediation, Kyiv is urging all parties to intensify talks while momentum remains, underscoring both geopolitical urgency and domestic political timelines.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stressed that the most contentious elements of negotiations including territorial control and security arrangements require direct engagement at the highest level. Despite progress on certain fronts, such as the recent prisoner exchange involving 314 individuals, deeper, more difficult issues like the status of Donetsk and management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain unresolved.

Ukrainian officials believe President Trump’s influence is crucial to bridging the remaining gaps between Kyiv and Moscow. According to Ukraine’s foreign minister, the current sequence of talks reflects progress yet highlights that “head-to-head” discussions between the leaders of both nations are necessary to resolve sticking points that diplomats have been unable to settle. Ukraine has expressed confidence that Trump, given his standing and leverage with Russian leadership, is the one world leader capable of encouraging a final, mutually acceptable settlement.

This appeal comes amid intensified U.S. diplomatic efforts. The Trump administration has been actively mediating between the two sides, having recently hosted rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi and proposing a framework for future negotiations possibly in Miami within the coming week. Ukraine has confirmed that it will participate in the next stage of discussions, emphasizing its commitment to diplomacy even as complex issues linger.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also highlighted that the United States under Trump’s leadership has set a June deadline for a final peace agreement, pushing for an end to the conflict before the summer. According to Ukrainian officials, this timeline is driven in part by Washington’s domestic political considerations, including the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, which could shift the administration’s foreign policy focus. Zelenskyy confirmed that Washington proposes a clear negotiation schedule and has indicated that political pressure may be applied if the parties fail to adhere to the June target.

While Ukraine supports a defined timetable, Kyiv has been careful to underline it will not accept any agreement that undermines its sovereignty or legitimises Russian control over Ukrainian territory a stance reaffirmed repeatedly by Ukrainian leadership. The insistence on preserving territorial integrity remains one of the most sensitive subjects during talks.

Alongside peace negotiations, Ukraine continues to seek U.S.-led security guarantees that would deter future aggression and provide a framework for lasting stability. Kyiv has called for multinational monitoring systems including drones and satellite surveillance as part of any final arrangement. Ukrainian officials have also mentioned that some countries are willing to contribute troops to enforce such guarantees, though they have not publicly named those nations.

At the same time, tensions on the ground persist. Russia’s ongoing military actions underscore the challenges of negotiating peace amid active conflict, and the spectre of further escalation remains a stark reality as talks proceed.

Despite the intense focus on peace negotiations with Russia, Ukraine has reiterated its ambition to become a member of the European Union by 2027, viewing integration with Western institutions as a cornerstone of its long-term security and sovereignty strategy. Kyiv has also warned against any interim agreements that could be interpreted as recognizing Russian territorial claims a stance firmly rooted in international law and Ukrainian national interests.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the world watches closely to see whether the proposed June deadline and high-level involvement especially from President Trump can yield a breakthrough towards ending Europe’s longest conventional conflict in decades.
