From Kerala Roots to National Leadership: Fr. Stephen Alathara’s Enduring Role in the Indian Church

Bengaluru: Much of the Catholic Church’s national coordination in India unfolds away from public attention, shaped by steady leadership and long-term vision. Within this framework, Fr. Stephen Alathara, currently serving as Deputy Secretary General of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, has emerged as a key figure guiding pastoral direction and institutional development across the country.

Born on May 1, 1970, in Kerala, Fr. Alathara belongs to the Archdiocese of Verapoly and was ordained to the priesthood on January 26, 1995. His academic journey reflects a strong foundation in theology and formation studies, with advanced degrees in catechetics and administration, culminating in a doctorate from the Salesian Pontifical University. His research focused on moral and faith formation among children, an area that continues to influence his work.

Over the years, he has held a wide range of pastoral and administrative responsibilities, including roles as parish priest, seminary formator, diocesan spokesperson, and director of multiple Church institutions. Before taking on national responsibilities, he served the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council as Deputy Secretary General and spokesperson, and also led the Pastoral Orientation Centre, contributing significantly to pastoral planning in the state.

Beyond administration, Fr. Alathara is widely regarded as a theologian and educationist. He has authored more than 20 books and numerous articles, particularly in the field of catechetics, with his writings being used in seminaries both in India and abroad. His work reflects a commitment to shaping future clergy and educators through structured faith formation.

Colleagues and collaborators often describe him as a dynamic presence—someone who brings energy and clarity into institutional settings. His approach combines enthusiasm with a focus on execution, ensuring that ideas are not only developed but also implemented effectively.

Fr. Alathara has been serving as Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI since 2014 and has been reappointed for four consecutive terms 2014, 2018, 2022, and now 2026. This extended tenure places him among the longest-serving individuals in this crucial role, reflecting the continued confidence of the bishops in his leadership.

His continuity has contributed to institutional stability within the national episcopal conference, particularly in coordinating communication, planning initiatives, and ensuring the implementation of pastoral priorities across dioceses.

A central aspect of his role involves strengthening national Church structures. As Deputy Secretary General, he facilitates coordination among bishops, oversees major initiatives, and ensures alignment with the Church’s broader mission.

He also played a significant role in shaping the CCBI Pastoral Plan 2024, a comprehensive roadmap addressing evangelization, education, and social outreach, providing direction for the Church’s mission in India.

Fr. Alathara has been associated with the development of several key institutions and initiatives, including the establishment of the CCBI General Secretariat in New Delhi, the expansion of CCBI Publications, and institutional centres such as Shanti Sadan in Goa and Bethania in Faridabad. He has also supported initiatives like Communio and Catholic Connect, which focus on collaboration, sustainability, and digital engagement within the Church.

Known for his clarity in communication, he has served as a spokesperson at both diocesan and national levels, frequently addressing youth, educators, and Church leaders on themes of leadership, spiritual growth, and social responsibility.

His contributions to catechetics remain particularly significant. His widely used work, Introduction to Catechetics, continues to shape formation programmes, influencing generations of seminarians and educators.

Fr. Alathara has consistently advocated for a Church that is collaborative, mission-driven, and self-reliant. Through initiatives like Communio, he has encouraged dioceses and institutions to work in greater unity, while also supporting digital platforms that enhance communication and participation across the Catholic community.

From his early ministry in Kerala to his ongoing national responsibilities, his journey reflects sustained engagement with the evolving needs of the Church in India. His leadership stands out not only for the range of roles he has undertaken, but for the consistency with which he has carried forward initiatives and responded to emerging challenges.

In a space where much of the work happens quietly, his contribution underscores the importance of continuity, vision, and committed service in shaping the future of the Church in India.
