Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was born Francesco Possenti in Assisi, Italy, in 1838. From an early age, he was known for his piety and love for God. At the age of 18, while attending a military academy, he had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who guided him towards a life of holiness and devotion. Following this vision, Francesco left the academy and joined the Passionist Order, founded by Saint Paul of the Cross.
During his novitiate, Saint Gabriel wrote to his father expressing his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his desire to spend time with her rather than engaging in worldly diversions. He also made a resolution to visit Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament each day and to pray for a tender and efficacious devotion to Mary.
Saint Gabriel was known for his deep contemplation and his ability to avoid distractions. Despite the unrest in his country, Italy, at the time, he remained focused on his spiritual journey and sought to unite himself with God at all times.
At the age of 24, Saint Gabriel contracted tuberculosis and died shortly after. Despite his short life, he was recognized for his heroic sanctity and devotion to our Lord's Passion and the Compassion of His Mother. Following his death, many miracles were reported at his tomb in Isola di Gran Sasso, Italy.
Saint Gabriel was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920 and declared the patron saint of youth, especially young religious. He is remembered for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his unwavering commitment to the contemplative life.
