Thiruvananthapuram - In a recent incident of online fraud through WhatsApp, a man from Kerala fell victim to scammers employing AI-based deepfake technology, resulting in a loss of Rs 40,000.
The scam unfolded when the victim received a video call from an unfamiliar number on WhatsApp, with the caller impersonating the victim's former colleague. Claiming to be facing a medical emergency, the caller urgently requested financial assistance. Unbeknownst to the victim, the call was not made by the actual colleague but by a scammer using deepfake technology to manipulate the caller's identity convincingly.
As AI increasingly integrates into various aspects of our lives, it brings both positive advancements and challenges. While it enhances our experiences in planning vacations and offering intelligent personal assistance, it also provides new opportunities for malicious actors like scammers. With the rise of AI-based deepfake technology, such fraudsters are continuously updating their techniques to deceive and defraud unsuspecting individuals. This incident serves as a concerning example of how AI is being misused by criminals to exploit innocent victims.
