A descendant of the legendary Charlemagne, St. Rosalia was the daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses and Quisquina. Her birthplace is Palermo, Sicily. She had turned away from worldly things and towards God when she was young. After leaving her house, she moved into a cave where she wrote, "I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ." She stayed there totally concealed from the outside world.
She lived in intimate connection with God and committed herself to enormous mortifications. Subsequently, she relocated to Mount Pellegrino, approximately three miles from Palermo, to completely defeat her biological tendencies upon seeing her father's house. She is claimed to have reappeared after death, revealing that she spent several years in a little excavation near the grotto. Unknown to the rest of the world, she lived an odd and fascinating existence until dying alone in 1160. Several decades later, in 1625, during Pope Urban VIII's papacy, her body was found.
