During his Regina Caeli address, Pope Leo XIV urged the faithful to anchor their lives firmly in trust in God, cautioning them not to fall prey to influences that quietly erode their joy and inner peace. Speaking to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reminded them that while Christ comes to enrich life, there are forces that attempt to lead people away from that fullness.
Reflecting on the Gospel passage from Gospel of John, the Holy Father drew attention to Jesus’ image of Himself as both the shepherd and the gate. He explained that the true shepherd enters through the gate because he belongs to the sheep, while anyone who tries to enter by another path reveals harmful intent. This contrast, the Pope noted, highlights the difference between Christ, who gives life, and those who seek to exploit or mislead.
Emphasizing the closeness of Christ to every person, the Pope described Him as a shepherd who knows each individual personally, calls them by name, and searches for them when they stray. This relationship, he said, is rooted in friendship and care, not control or deprivation. Christ does not diminish human freedom but guides it toward what is good and life-giving.
The Pope stressed that Jesus does not deceive or manipulate the human conscience. Instead, He enlightens it, leading believers toward deeper truth and lasting happiness. Far from taking away joy, Christ expands it, offering a richer and more enduring sense of fulfillment to those who place their trust in Him.
At the same time, the Holy Father warned of various “thieves” that can infiltrate a person’s life. These may include individuals who undermine dignity, misleading ideas that cloud judgment, prejudices that distort relationships, or lifestyles driven by superficiality and consumerism. Such influences, he said, leave people spiritually empty and disconnected from true peace.
He also broadened the warning to include larger global realities, pointing to those who exploit natural resources recklessly, fuel violence, or perpetuate injustice. These forces, he cautioned, rob humanity of the possibility of a peaceful and hopeful future.
In light of these challenges, the Pope encouraged believers to be vigilant about what shapes their thoughts and choices. He called on them to reflect carefully on whom they allow to guide their lives and to resist anything that leads them away from truth and goodness.
Concluding his message, the Pope reaffirmed the central call of the Gospel: to place unwavering trust in Christ, the Good Shepherd who gives life abundantly. He entrusted all the faithful to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying that she may accompany them and strengthen them on their journey of faith.
