Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has placed peace and the unity of the Church at the centre of his first year as leader of the Catholic Church, calling on Christians to become witnesses of love, reconciliation and communion in a world deeply divided by war, hatred and polarization.
Reflecting on the first year of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate, Vatican Editorial Director Andrea Tornielli said the Pope’s repeated appeals for unity are not about creating a false calm or ignoring differences within the Church. Instead, the Pope sees unity as a living expression of Christian love that allows believers to overcome divisions and work together for peace.
Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago and later a missionary in Peru before becoming Pope, has consistently spoken about the importance of unity among Christians. According to the reflection, this message has become even more urgent at a time when the world is witnessing growing conflicts and what the Pope describes as the weakening of international law.
One of the key moments highlighting this vision came during the Extraordinary Consistory held on January 7, 2026. Addressing Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV referred to the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI, who had said that the Church does not grow through proselytism but through attraction, especially through the witness of love shown by Christians.
Pope Leo XIV repeated this idea by saying that the real force attracting people to Christ is the love of God revealed through Jesus. He explained that the love of Christ should inspire Christians to love one another, forgive one another and build communion instead of division. According to the Pope, while unity attracts people, division only scatters them apart.
The reflection points out that the Pope’s understanding of unity is deeply connected to the everyday life of believers. Unity is shown when Christians forgive each other, overcome tensions and accept that all people are sinners in need of mercy. It is also expressed through synodality, which Pope Leo XIV sees as a practical way for the Church to walk together in communion.
Tornielli noted that the Pope believes the Christian community becomes truly missionary only when it avoids self centred attitudes and ideological battles. Instead of relying on marketing methods or seeking attention for itself, the Church should reflect the mercy and love it has first received from Christ.
The reflection also highlighted the Pope’s concern about the language of hatred spreading through digital platforms. Pope Leo XIV has encouraged Christians to choose meekness, peace and dialogue over arrogance and hostility. He believes the unity of the Church should become a sign of hope not only for Christians but for the whole world.
During the Mass marking the beginning of his Petrine Ministry, Pope Leo XIV spoke of his desire for a united Church that could become “a leaven for a reconciled world.” He invited Christians, followers of other religions, seekers of God and all people of good will to work together in building a world where peace can reign.
As wars and divisions continue to affect many parts of the world, the Pope’s message presents the unity of the Church as more than an internal concern. For Pope Leo XIV, it is a prophecy of peace and a witness that reconciliation is still possible in humanity’s darkest moments.
