The Syro-Malabar Media Commission has issued a statement regarding false statements circulating in Social media regarding the decisions taken the in the Syro-Malabar Synod regarding the uniform mode of celebration of the Holy Qurbana in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly.
The Commission emphasized that no final decisions have been made yet, and all proposals are subject to the decision of the Holy Father. The statement also urges cooperation and unity among the members of the Catholic Church in implementing the uniform mode of celebration of Holy Qurbana. The full statement reads as follows:
The committee of bishops appointed by the Synod held discussions at different levels to solve the problems that have arisen on the implementation of the uniform mode of celebration of the Holy Qurbana in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly. It was intimated clearly that the details of these discussions should not be published through the media. It was brought to our notice that the social media are publishing several conjectures as decisions made during the discussions with the Synodal Committee.
It was intimated to all the concerned parties that all the decisions made during the discussions would be subject to the decision of the Holy Father since Archbishop Cyril Vasil was appointed the special delegate of the Holy Father with regard to the implementation of the uniform mode of the Eucharistic celebration in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly. This fact was made clear unambiguously in the meeting of the Synod as well as in the various discussion sessions.
Hence it has to be understood by all that the committee of bishops appointed by the Synod cannot take any decision unilaterally. All the proposals that came out during these discussions were intimated to the Pontifical Delegate. His observations on these proposals were intimated to the concerned parties at appropriate times.it is hereby affirmed that no final decision on these matters has been made yet.
All those who are spreading disinformation on these matters have to desist from their reprehensible actions. The Six member Synodal Committee of Bishops under the leadership of Abp. Mathew Moolakkat as per the suggestion of the Abp. Andrews Thazhath, the Pontifical Administrator, appointed by the Synod in January, 2023, and the lay leaders who were appointed to continue the discussions held discussions at different levels.
The Synod of August, 2023 that was held, after the completion of the first phase of action of the Pontifical Delegate, has decided to continue discussions with the members of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly in order to make the mission of the Pontifical Delegate smoother.
The Committee of nine bishops under the leadership of Mar Bosco Puthur held 16 sittings of discussions with those who support and those who oppose. They also held discussions with the members of the Curia, the Forane Vicars, the Presbyteral Council, representatives of different lay organizations and the Ad-Hoc Committee created for this purpose.
These discussions were held with the intention of finding a speedy resolution of the crisis experienced in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly with regard to the implementation of the uniform mode of the Holy Qurbana.
Also, it is affirmed again that there is no ambiguity with regard to the implementation of the uniform mode of celebration which was decided by the Synod, approved by the Holy See and proposed by Pope Francis. The only focus for discussion was how to implement the uniform mode of celebration of the Qurbana in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly.
The decision to implement the uniform mode of celebration is applicable to all eparchies and just cause it was not implemented in one eparchy does not invalidate the decision for all eparchies.
All are requested to cooperate in a collaborative and supportive manner to implement this decision in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly.
All are requested to be extremely vigilant against individuals and organizations that try to weaken the solidarity and unity of the Catholic Church.
All are cordially urged All are cordially urged to desist from issuing statements and interventions that would create obstacles to the attempts to find a solution to this problem. We shall go together with one mind forgetting all regional or personal differences in perspectives.
All are requested to pray and act knowing the mind of the Church in creating an atmosphere of unity in the implementation of the uniform mode of Eucharistic celebration.
