Kerala Landslides: 151 Dead, Hundreds Rescued Amid Ongoing Search Efforts

Nearly 1,000 people have been rescued following landslides in Wayanad district, Kerala, with at least 151 confirmed dead and many others still missing. Heavy rains early Tuesday caused hillsides to collapse, sending mud, water, and boulders through tea and cardamom plantations and small communities. This disaster is the worst the state has experienced since the 2018 floods. According to the state chief minister's spokesman, 187 people remain unaccounted for. The Indian Army has rescued 1,000 individuals and is working on constructing an alternate bridge after the main one linking the affected area to Chooralmala was destroyed.

State law and order official M R Ajith Kumar explained that the landslides originated at the top of the hills and impacted the lower valley areas where residents lived. The current focus is on searching the uphill areas for stranded people and recovering bodies. Reports indicate that nearly 350 out of 400 registered houses in the region have been damaged. Although heavy rainfall has hindered rescue efforts, the weather department predicts some respite, although rain is expected throughout Wednesday.
